What is Meditation and How does it Help Calm?

WHAT IS MEDITATION?

Meditation is a practice to help focus and relax the mind.

During meditation we concentrate on our breathing, our thoughts are more focused and singular. Whilst in relaxation mode, our minds wander and thoughts are more daydream-like and unfocused.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF MEDITATION?

There are multiple benefits from meditation, from reducing stress, relaxation and detaching ourselves from issues of stress/issues at work and family.

  • Meditation will gradually improve our body’s power of concentration
  • Improved focus on concentration can help us in our daily tasks
  • It can support our detachment from daily issues and allow space to live in the moment and not worry about the future or dwell on the past; finding that space for calm or inner peace
  • Be able to detach from daily worries; this can help you change or review the perspective of situation
  • Self-discipline; as meditation is something you have to do and learn for yourself, taking time to practice
  • It can help balance the left and right side of the brain, relating to emotion and intellectual processing
  • It may strengthen the immune system
  • It has been shown to reduce pain sensations, muscular tension, regulate blood pressure, migraines/ headaches, anxiety attacks
  • It can build self-confidence, create positive attitude to life and boost energy

For Children the benefits are:

  • The brain neurons form complex connections in different areas of the brain – neuroplasticity (brain is shaped through regular exercise)
  • Cortisol (stress hormone) is reduced in the body and so the stress response reduces and the relaxation response increases and occurs
  • Endorphins (feel good hormones) are released creating a positive feel for the child
  • Relaxation response occurs
  • Children feel revived, re-energised afterwards
  • Children able to more able to manage emotions
  • Create positive imaginative ideas within the visualisation

The use of emotions within visualisation is very useful and important. It is often a way to review situations and images and observe how we feel and react rather than suppressing the emotion  and holding onto it. By allowing the feeling to come to the surface, you can acknowledge it and let it go, which then in the real life situation can help you change your reactions and move in a different direction.

Linking sight, sound and feeling together is more powerful than just seeing a picture alone. It can further the body into a relaxed state. Often people will have one sense stronger than another, so tagging into other senses can deepen their connection, whether hearing, smell, taste, feeling or sight.

Are you a Frazzled Mum?

Feeling like a Frazzled Mum? Are you having a gggrrr moment? Need a quick tool to calm yourself? Got a minute or less?

Then I have the answer for you!

As a busy Mum I wanted a simple go-to book with tips and tools that I could use to bring some calm into my life.

This book is designed like a deck of oracle cards so you can randomly open the book at any page. Then, you simply carry out one of the exercises, or you can choose a number from 1 to 160. All are designed to take as long as a Peppa Pig episode or for the kettle to boil. Using the tools regularly may help you become more balanced and calm as a parent. They can help you to become the parent you want to be, not the frazzled parent you feel like! Get into the habit of choosing one a day and then do the tool or technique. Once you do something for 21 days, it becomes habit – or a natural reaction to a situation. All of these exercises have been designed to take from one minute to five minutes. No one misses Mummy when Peppa Pig is on!

Here are a few quick tips from my book!

  1. Think of a positive affirmation for the day – “I am good enough” or “I am joyful” or “I am lovable”. Repeat three times throughout the day.
  2. Spend a minute breathing in a rainbow of colours – the full spectrum – close your eyes, relax and feel your body fill and glow with a rainbow of colours. Was there a colour that stood out?
  3. Create a calming roller ball – perfect for your handbag to calm and relax your or for headaches. Buy a glass 10ml roller ball bottle from Ebay or similar, add in 4 drops of CPTG lavender oil and top up with fractionated coconut oil or a flavourless oil such as sunflower oil. Then use on pulse points.
  4. Sleep issues? Try the Dr Bach Night Time Rescue Remedy. Simply spray under tongue before bed – check the usage guide for more info.
  5. Lie down and imagine you are butter melting onto a piece of hot toast as you relax your body completely.
  6. Spend a minute listening to your heart – close your eyes, relax and feel your heart space glow with pink; allow this colour to swamp your whole body – feel the love and calm.
  7. Next time you shampoo your hair, take an extra minute and give yourself an Indian Head Massage. Rub all over your head, then with conditioner stroke from forehead to neck. As you dry, you can do the gentle hair pull. Great to calm and stimulate growth.
  8. Tension building? Put your hands at the back of your head, rub your thumbs across the bony base and then “shampoo” your head all over with your fingers. Mini Indian Head Massage – so relaxing.
