School Holidays – Joy or Pain

As of 3.30pm the children will be on half term holiday. I don’t know about you but it really doesn’t seem that long since they went back after Christmas! Then Easter is only a few weeks away!

5th Day of Advent – 5th December

Well Christmas has arrived here – the tree is up and decorated. Tinsel is flowing down the staircase and festive pictures are up. Alongside this a few festive stresses are appearing, one of our elves has been sent home 🙁 – another blog will follow on this! Here’s day 5 of Advent

Advent countdown – DAY 5

 

Indoor Activity –  Air Drying Clay Decorations

Air drying clay decorations are fun and easy to make. You can get clay from hobby or art/ craft shops.

  • You’ll need some clay, some tools or cutters and afterwards some paint
  • Roll the clay out to a thickness of 1cm or less
  • Use the cutters to cut the shape out
  • Use a pencil or tools to add detail to the clay.
  • Make a hole in the clay near to the top so you can thread a ribbon through
  • Leave to dry  (often overnight)
  • Decorate with paint (acrylic paints are great)
  • Allow paint to dry overnight
  • You can cover with varnish afterwards once the paint is dry
  • Attach a ribbon, string or thread  through the hole  so you can hang on the Christmas tree or your twig from day one

Outdoor Activity – Walk and have a hot chocolate outside

Take a walk in the park or playground. See if you can find some pine cones as you’ll need these for activities later in the week.

If it’s raining look for another activity and pop this in the diary to do another day!

A great way to burn off some energy.

Take some snacks and make an afternoon of it (especially if you do a mini-beast hunt or treasure hunt or collage collection on the way back). Take a flask of hot chocolate and some mugs and some snacks (it’ll cool quickly in winter!)

Calm Activity – Breathing in Peace

  • Close your eyes and relax
  • As you breathe in imagine you are breathing in the colour blue. It can be any shade of blue, but a sky blue is a nice colour
  • See the colour blue filling you with calm and peace
  • Then on the out breath, visualize breathing out blue
  • Filling the room with a beautiful peaceful blue energy, an energy of peace and calm for you and your child(ren)
  • If you like you can repeat the affirmations “I am peace, I am calm”
  • Repeat this 10 times
  • As you do this, feel the loving, peaceful energy surround you both
  • Great to create a calm space for bed

Gratitude Exercise

 Don’t forget to spend a few minutes with your child and share something that you are grateful, glad about, enjoyed during that day.

Need some Calm for Christmas & Calming Ideas for Kids?

When the word Christmas is uttered for the first time we often all have a shudder down the spine! It’s not just the knowledge that the shops will be heaving with decorations, toys and chocolates or the fact that the children will be bouncing and creating endless wish lists for Santa. The real problem is the time of year it happens!

 

Hands up for October? Hands up for November? Any takers for September? Any summer takers? Come on own up!

 

The schools don’t help (especially when kids break up 10 days before the big event). They have to practice plays and carols so we often have those starting in November – winding the children up.

 

Do we in fact need a countdown advent calendar to the advent calendar itself I wonder sometimes?!!

 

Then think of the choices of toys, games and presents that children are tempted with. Plus the food, the drink, the tins of sweets, the chocolates and endless party food! The visiting relatives and on….

 

All the “shoulds” come into play as well – should go and see Santa, should see this relative, should buy x a present, should write 150 billion cards and post them, should, should, should….

 

It’s no wonder we begin to dread the C word being uttered. The stress it creates in our minds, emotions and bodies is palpable from its first utterance. It rarely disappears until “the” family events are over and you can crash at home under a sea of plastic toys with a nice sherry.

 

So this book is written with love to offer some support over this special time of year. A collation of things to do inside and out to occupy the family before the big day (without costing a fortune!), plus tools and tips to bring calm to points of the day and bedtime (although I can’t guarantee that they will work to help them sleep on Christmas Eve!).

 

From my festive heart to yours, remember only a few things are important:

 

– Presence is what kids need – they need you, you physically and mentally with them – the toy they crave won’t last as long as the memory of cuddles and fun with you.

– A tradition or memory can be as simple as making paper snowflakes, it doesn’t have to be a trip to Lapland. It’s something you do together, regularly every year.

– As your children grow older your relationship to Christmas will change. The sea of plastic and wrapping paper and 3am wakes will end. So enjoy the moment you have with your child now – for it truly is the only present you need.

Half Term Holidays

It’s the weekend that marks the start of February half-term holidays.

The kids aren’t too exhausted this term, they aren’t over excited due to the man in the red suit or the prospect of 6 whole weeks of holidays.

For once it feels like a nice chill-out week. Plus the sun has been out sharing its heat already – the prospect of warm days again!

So I thought I’d share my ebook that I wrote last summer, in case you wanted any gentle activities to fill a day. There’s lots for the outdoors and playful things and crafty things for the indoors so. So whatever the weather there’s something to do click here: 101 things to do in summer with kids

One way to use it is to write the numbers on a piece of paper and cut up (or get children to do this – sneaky handwriting practice!). Then pop in a jar or envelope and pull one out whenever you need some inspiration!

What is Meditation and How does it Help Calm?

WHAT IS MEDITATION?

Meditation is a practice to help focus and relax the mind.

During meditation we concentrate on our breathing, our thoughts are more focused and singular. Whilst in relaxation mode, our minds wander and thoughts are more daydream-like and unfocused.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF MEDITATION?

There are multiple benefits from meditation, from reducing stress, relaxation and detaching ourselves from issues of stress/issues at work and family.

  • Meditation will gradually improve our body’s power of concentration
  • Improved focus on concentration can help us in our daily tasks
  • It can support our detachment from daily issues and allow space to live in the moment and not worry about the future or dwell on the past; finding that space for calm or inner peace
  • Be able to detach from daily worries; this can help you change or review the perspective of situation
  • Self-discipline; as meditation is something you have to do and learn for yourself, taking time to practice
  • It can help balance the left and right side of the brain, relating to emotion and intellectual processing
  • It may strengthen the immune system
  • It has been shown to reduce pain sensations, muscular tension, regulate blood pressure, migraines/ headaches, anxiety attacks
  • It can build self-confidence, create positive attitude to life and boost energy

For Children the benefits are:

  • The brain neurons form complex connections in different areas of the brain – neuroplasticity (brain is shaped through regular exercise)
  • Cortisol (stress hormone) is reduced in the body and so the stress response reduces and the relaxation response increases and occurs
  • Endorphins (feel good hormones) are released creating a positive feel for the child
  • Relaxation response occurs
  • Children feel revived, re-energised afterwards
  • Children able to more able to manage emotions
  • Create positive imaginative ideas within the visualisation

The use of emotions within visualisation is very useful and important. It is often a way to review situations and images and observe how we feel and react rather than suppressing the emotion  and holding onto it. By allowing the feeling to come to the surface, you can acknowledge it and let it go, which then in the real life situation can help you change your reactions and move in a different direction.

Linking sight, sound and feeling together is more powerful than just seeing a picture alone. It can further the body into a relaxed state. Often people will have one sense stronger than another, so tagging into other senses can deepen their connection, whether hearing, smell, taste, feeling or sight.

Tools For Balance and Calm Part i

Need some quick hits to create pockets of calm and relaxation? Here are a few from my “Balance and Calm Toolkit for Frazzled Mums” book:

Find a quiet space, sit or lie down, close your eyes and concentrate on your breathing and the sensation of calm. Allow the feeling of calm to flood over your mind and body.

Keep things simple. Take a deep breath in and release. Repeat if you need.

Have a big stretch and reach to the sky, release those tensioned shoulders. As you do so, breathe in as you stretch and out as you come down again.

Breathe slowly in and out through your nose and then repeat through your mouth. What different sensations did you have? Which relaxes you more? Does one make your body/shoulders/tummy move more?

Need to cleanse the energy of the house? Take a lit incense stick and waft around the house with the intention of clearing all the old negative energies.

Repeat the affirmation to yourself, “I am a good mum”.

Sit down in a chair, have a cuddle with your lovely little one and watch Peppa Pig together. Create a positive happy memory.
