This week can be a stressful one for those with 7 and 11 year olds – SATS week. The schools can be gentle and supportive – but these are young children doing tests over a week!

So this video is to share some quick and simple tools you can implement into your day for the benefit of any child – and you as a parent too!

The video is 43 minutes long – but you can always stop, pause and restart using this link on the page.

The key element is to choose something to do and to show your child that you benefit from this process too. So if you are asking for them to put their electronics down – make sure you don’t have your phone on either!

Wishing you all calm

Recipes for Fun and Children – Bread Rolls

I thought I’d start doing a monthly recipe share – something that has worked well with my kids – both as an experience of doing and also with eating!

At the weekend I found a great little recipe which was simple and easy – and didn’t take too long to make. I must say they tasted sensational!

Bread Rolls Recipe:

250g strong white flour, 1 teaspoon salt, 1 teaspoon sugar, 7g fast yeast, 150ml warm water

(poppy seeds etc can be added too)

oiled tray, 200 C fan, cling film or damp teacloth

  • First sift the salt and flour into a bowl.
  • Then add sugar and yeast (and poppy seeds if using).
  • Make a well and pour in water, mix together to form dough
  • Knead for 10 mins . stretching and folding the dough to make it feel less sticky and more elastic
  • Then divide into 4 or 6 rolls depending on how many you need, place on oiled tray and cover with cling film or damp cloth and place somewhere warm. Leave for 30 mins and will double in size
  • Remove cover and place in over for 10-15 mins until sound hollow when tapped on the bottom
  • Allow to cool and then enjoy 🙂

We had pulled pork in ours and they were delicious. Explain to your child that the bread has a different texture as it isn’t a light as a bought roll (had to do this with my children!)

Enjoy x

Do you find your children go a bit emotional, loony or sensitive around the time of the full moon?

It’s not unusual. A few days before and for a couple of days after it can affect their emotions, behaviour and sleep patterns

In this video I share information around this subject and how you can support your children.

In the UK we have a full moon on 31st Jan, which is also a blood moon and a super moon and a blue moon! Plus an eclipse so the energy is beginning to affect us all already!

If the moon can effect the tides, the largest bodies of water, then why wouldn’t it affect us as humans, mainly made up of water.

Are you looking for a different way forward for family calm? To do things differently? Keeping it simple?

After a holiday there are always two issues – one is the thought of how to do things different or calmer in the next school holiday and the second is how to improve daily life to make it more balanced, calm and flow with positive ease.

Holidays are stressful, the Christmas one in particular – stress over what gifts, expectations, money, food, relatives, finance, how to fill the holidays and entertain the little ones. It’s almost a game of survival rather than  enjoyment sometimes.

What if you could do things differently – add one additional aspect to your family’s routine. In fact do one thing as your child sleeps to support their mindset and help resolve “issues” which affect them and the whole family.

Issues such as sibling rivalry, toddler tantrums, food/toilet issues, confidence, self-esteem, separation anxiety, sleep, anxiety/ worries and more…. SleepTalk(R) has been supporting children for over 30 years, following a tested script that you read to your child as they sleep. Making a positive impact on their mental, emotional and physical stability.

If your children played together and weren’t jealous, if they were able to go into school without crying or worrying about separation, if toddler tantrums reduced, if spectrum displays were reduced? How would that make you feel? Your child feel? What impact on your family?

Just for February I’m offering SleepTalk Program for £99, supported through a secret Facebook Group. You will access all the training videos and PDFs needed to get you started and I will support you through the journey.

You will have charts to measure where your child is now and the progress they make over the first 8 week.

Major positive changes are possible in 8 weeks, although longer term issues will take longer. The whole family benefits from the positive ripples of SleepTalk.

Top Things to do for Calm on Christmas Eve

Christmas Eve must be the hardest night for kids to go to sleep. So excited about the prospect of presents balanced with worried about what they will get or not get….

We have two extremes one child who loves all things exciting about Christmas – Elves, cards, crafts, stories, singing carols, school performances and the excitement of Christmas Eve.

We also have a child who finds it overwhelming, where the prospect of waiting is too much and wants to go to sleep for a week and wake up on Christmas morning, who made us send a playful elf back to Santa, who doesn’t like Santa in the house (and stocking has to be left outside his door).

Two extremes  – and balancing these very different needs takes a careful balancing act and compromises.

So I thought I’d share the Christmas Eve Tools from my book “Christmas Calm”:

There is a video on my Facebook page of the story massage. I like to add a drop of lavender to my hands to help calm and evoke feelings of sleep as I stroke their clothes.

Indoor Activity

 Letter to Santa

The time has come to write a note to Santa or Father Christmas for him when he brings the presents and you leave a drink/ snack for him and maybe Rudolph

  • This probably isn’t the time to write a list for him (got caught out with that before!!)
  • Maybe draw a picture
  • Maybe ask after the reindeer
  • Or draw a picture of you opening a present or eating food or going on a walk or sitting by the tree
  • Santa loves colourful pictures
  • Show some appreciation for him and his team J

Paper Crowns

  • Why not make and decorate some paper crowns or party hats for Christmas Day
  • Glitter, paint, coloured pens, felts, crayons, foil, wrappers of sweets or chocolate coins

Outdoor Activity

Reindeer Food

  • For the oats you need to use large oats not ones from “quick oats”
  • Mix a handful of porridge oats and teaspoon of glitter together
  • You could use different glitter colours for each child
  • Store in a bag or use immediately!
  • Then you can go outside and sprinkle the reindeer food in the garden so the reindeer can find your house with the sparkles and have a little snack with the oats J
  • Do your grandparents need some too?
  • (NB The RSPB have asked not to put glitter into the garden with the oats as it can be harmful for small birds and animals. They suggest putting it in a bowl by Santa’s letter)

Calm Activity

So today is a big one for sleep. Very excited children scared to be awake in case Santa doesn’t come. My kids have to go for a super long walk with Daddy (whilst I wrap presents and watch a movie!). Then we have lots of calming things to help bring their energy levels down.

Remember:

  • Use the lavender bedding spray
  • Cuddles reading books throughout the day to keep calm moments!
  • Breathing in blue for calm
  • Using “I am calm” as an affirmation (can you get away with “I am sleepy”?!)
  • Breathing in using the word calm or peace
  • Doing a special story massage
  • Mindful eating or drinking (talk about the sensations you feel)
  • My son’s tip is to leave your stocking outside your bedroom door, then you don’t worry about Santa coming into the room
  • My daughter’s tip is to have huge long cuddles with Mummy/Daddy and go for a loooonnnggg walk!

Story Massage

Christmas Eve

Stroke across the back and shoulders (from top to bottom) Tonight is Christmas Eve

Stroke from shoulders to lower back Time to snuggle down and rest
Stroke down the back and then gently pinch big toe (reflex point for “sleep”) Snuggle in the bedding from your nose to your toes

Stroke around eyes (as if wearing glasses) Rest your eyes
Stroke gently across the back Relax your body
Move hand up and down the back as the breathe in Take a few deep breathes
Hold shoulders Allow yourself to relax and be calm
Stroke down shoulders/arms Calm and relaxed
Stroke down shoulders/arms Calm and relaxed

Sunset Visualisation

  • Close your eyes and lie quietly and still, have a wriggle if you need to and relax.
  • Imagine you are sat on a beach in the early morning. No one else is around, just you and your Mum/Dad. All is quiet as everyone else has left the beach for the evening. The sun is drifting into the sea in front of you; the sky is changing colour. It goes from the vibrant blue of the day to a pale pink as the sun drops a little further.
  • You notice shapes in the colours that change colour – what creatures or shapes can you make out?
  • As the sun continues to drop lower into the sea, the pink changes to a deeper red, until the sky is glowing a deep red and the sun has changed from vibrant yellow to a deep orange.
  • The clouds are changing colour too: some are pink, others red and others orange, little gaps of blue are still visible. Slowly, the sun continues to dip into the sea until there is no more sun to be seen and the colours all fade into the darkness
  • Which was your favourite colour?
  • What shapes did you see in the clouds?
  • It’s time to leave the beach, so wiggle your toes and your fingers and open your eyes
  • Share your favourite colour
  • What shapes did you see in the clouds?

5th Day of Advent – 5th December

Well Christmas has arrived here – the tree is up and decorated. Tinsel is flowing down the staircase and festive pictures are up. Alongside this a few festive stresses are appearing, one of our elves has been sent home 🙁 – another blog will follow on this! Here’s day 5 of Advent

Advent countdown – DAY 5

Indoor Activity –  Air Drying Clay Decorations

Air drying clay decorations are fun and easy to make. You can get clay from hobby or art/ craft shops.

  • You’ll need some clay, some tools or cutters and afterwards some paint
  • Roll the clay out to a thickness of 1cm or less
  • Use the cutters to cut the shape out
  • Use a pencil or tools to add detail to the clay.
  • Make a hole in the clay near to the top so you can thread a ribbon through
  • Leave to dry  (often overnight)
  • Decorate with paint (acrylic paints are great)
  • Allow paint to dry overnight
  • You can cover with varnish afterwards once the paint is dry
  • Attach a ribbon, string or thread  through the hole  so you can hang on the Christmas tree or your twig from day one

Outdoor Activity – Walk and have a hot chocolate outside

Take a walk in the park or playground. See if you can find some pine cones as you’ll need these for activities later in the week.

If it’s raining look for another activity and pop this in the diary to do another day!

A great way to burn off some energy.

Take some snacks and make an afternoon of it (especially if you do a mini-beast hunt or treasure hunt or collage collection on the way back). Take a flask of hot chocolate and some mugs and some snacks (it’ll cool quickly in winter!)

Calm Activity – Breathing in Peace

  • Close your eyes and relax
  • As you breathe in imagine you are breathing in the colour blue. It can be any shade of blue, but a sky blue is a nice colour
  • See the colour blue filling you with calm and peace
  • Then on the out breath, visualize breathing out blue
  • Filling the room with a beautiful peaceful blue energy, an energy of peace and calm for you and your child(ren)
  • If you like you can repeat the affirmations “I am peace, I am calm”
  • Repeat this 10 times
  • As you do this, feel the loving, peaceful energy surround you both
  • Great to create a calm space for bed

Need some Calm for Christmas & Calming Ideas for Kids?

When the word Christmas is uttered for the first time we often all have a shudder down the spine! It’s not just the knowledge that the shops will be heaving with decorations, toys and chocolates or the fact that the children will be bouncing and creating endless wish lists for Santa. The real problem is the time of year it happens!

Hands up for October? Hands up for November? Any takers for September? Any summer takers? Come on own up!

The schools don’t help (especially when kids break up 10 days before the big event). They have to practice plays and carols so we often have those starting in November – winding the children up.

Do we in fact need a countdown advent calendar to the advent calendar itself I wonder sometimes?!!

Then think of the choices of toys, games and presents that children are tempted with. Plus the food, the drink, the tins of sweets, the chocolates and endless party food! The visiting relatives and on….

All the “shoulds” come into play as well – should go and see Santa, should see this relative, should buy x a present, should write 150 billion cards and post them, should, should, should….

It’s no wonder we begin to dread the C word being uttered. The stress it creates in our minds, emotions and bodies is palpable from its first utterance. It rarely disappears until “the” family events are over and you can crash at home under a sea of plastic toys with a nice sherry.

So this book is written with love to offer some support over this special time of year. A collation of things to do inside and out to occupy the family before the big day (without costing a fortune!), plus tools and tips to bring calm to points of the day and bedtime (although I can’t guarantee that they will work to help them sleep on Christmas Eve!).

From my festive heart to yours, remember only a few things are important:

– Presence is what kids need – they need you, you physically and mentally with them – the toy they crave won’t last as long as the memory of cuddles and fun with you.

– A tradition or memory can be as simple as making paper snowflakes, it doesn’t have to be a trip to Lapland. It’s something you do together, regularly every year.

– As your children grow older your relationship to Christmas will change. The sea of plastic and wrapping paper and 3am wakes will end. So enjoy the moment you have with your child now – for it truly is the only present you need.

– Take a photo everyday, as Christmas is more than just one day – especially with young children. Save your memories for them to remember in the future. Come and share on my Facebook page (www.facebook.com/createfamilycalm)!

Enjoy your present Christmas, and if this book helps I’m even happier
