Being judged by Topsy and Tim’s Mum!

I often feel I’m failing as a Mum. I get frustrated when getting kids out of the door to school, the endless “get your shoes on, get your shoes on, get your shoes on”. I’m not very Mary Poppins! Sometimes I feel I should be.

I love the Topsy and Tim books and so did my children, we also loved the TV adaptation. Again the Mum is so perfect so “yes darling of course you can”, when I’m saying “no you can’t get your pokemon cards we need to go”.

Who is comparing me against theses fictional characters – that’s me! No one else is judging me against these Mums or female characters! Me!

I may feel I’m being judged by other Mums too, especially as my business is called “Create Family Calm”. But there’s a reason why I’m doing what I’m doing it because my family and I need these tools in our lives ,they work (when used :-))

But do you know what, I’m a Mum, with some tools, who occasionally forgets to get the tools out of the toolbox in the moment! This is why I wrote the book!
Being a Mum is hard work, its not all “Topsy and Tim”, we have real-life children with real life issues and real life hormones flooding through our bodies!

So this is me just sharing my truth and saying – I’m doing the best I can.

You’re a Mum doing the best you can, and that’s great, I’m here cheering you on, I can bring out the half-time oranges for you if you like, just let me know!

8 Tips for Balance and Calm

8 Tips for Balance and Calm

Here are a few quick tips from my book!

  1. Think of a positive affirmation for the day – “I am good enough” or “I am joyful” or “I am lovable”. Repeat three times throughout the day.
  2. Spend a minute breathing in a rainbow of colours – the full spectrum – close your eyes, relax and feel your body fill and glow with a rainbow of colours. Was there a colour that stood out?
  3. Create a calming roller ball – perfect for your handbag to calm and relax your or for headaches. Buy a glass 10ml roller ball bottle from Ebay or similar, add in 4 drops of CPTG lavender oil and top up with fractionated coconut oil or a flavourless oil such as sunflower oil. Then use on pulse points.
  4. Sleep issues? Try the Dr Bach Night Time Rescue Remedy. Simply spray under tongue before bed – check the usage guide for more info.
  5. Lie down and imagine you are butter melting onto a piece of hot toast as you relax your body completely.
  6. Spend a minute listening to your heart – close your eyes, relax and feel your heart space glow with pink; allow this colour to swamp your whole body – feel the love and calm.
  7. Next time you shampoo your hair, take an extra minute and give yourself an Indian Head Massage. Rub all over your head, then with conditioner stroke from forehead to neck. As you dry, you can do the gentle hair pull. Great to calm and stimulate growth.
  8. Tension building? Put your hands at the back of your head, rub your thumbs across the bony base and then “shampoo” your head all over with your fingers. Mini Indian Head Massage – so relaxing.

Volunteer Work – Corporate Social Responsibility for the Self-employed

Rom volunteer

Volunteer to Give Back to Society

In the corporate world, the term “Corporate Social Responsibility” is up there with sustainability as part of business strategy. Corporate Social Responsibility (or CSR) is basically supporting the local environment where you work and the local societies or people around your business, or those affected by your business. So it can be  doing something environmental, like beach cleaning, running a training program for young graduates or school leavers or doing volunteer work in a local charity.

CSR for the individual?

As a self-employed person we can still do our bit for the local environment and society. Just on a smaller scale. There are plenty of charities or local groups looking for people to support them in donating time, or you can join a board of governors, even the PTA for your child’s school is fulfilling the CSR term.

My Choice of Volunteer Work

For me I chose to volunteer at the Local Surestart Centre. Since my daughter was born we went to breastfeeding group, then moved onto “under 1s play” and then “stay and play” groups at the Children’s Centre. It seemed a natural progression for me to volunteer in the group when my daughter went to school.

I loved doing the art table and the modelling dough, plus talking to other Mums. Its fun to meet new families and see the children grow and develop, especially now mine are a both at school 🙂

As I offered Relax Kids classes at the Centre I was able to do a mini relax at the end of the “stay and play” session. Within a few weeks the kids all used to lie down on the rugs with their blankets! To see them calm down from all the running and play and actually lie still listening to the visualisation was just fab.

Additionally when my daughter attended the groups I also went to their “Parent’s Survey” mornings and joined their stakeholder meeting as a parent. Then when she went to school I also joined the school PTA , supporting their plans and helping at events (usually involving cake and chocolate!).

Benefits to me of Volunteer Work

  • A sense of giving back to the staff who ran the groups and supported me with answers as my children were growing up
  • I had a great time playing with the modelling dough and art table
  • I improved my self-confidence as I approached Mums I didn’t know to make them feel welcome and chat to them during the session
  • I shared my skills as a Relax Kids Coach and a Holistic Therapist
  • I fine tuned some of my Relax Kids elements for small preschool children who take a while to settle down!
  • My self-esteem increased as I had a positive affect on the group as a volunteer
  • I was meeting new people, out of my comfort zone and this has helped my business networking
  • My DBS was sponsored by the council as a volunteer
  • I felt I was giving back to my local community through my time there
  • I felt valued and having made a difference in someone’s day

Volunteering gave me so many opportunities and I would highly recommend to other self-employed people. It can be as big or as small as you like. From one/two hours a week to a two week commitment. From school reading programs, charity work to supporting the elderly or garden work. There are so many types of volunteer work out there -so think about your skills or what role you’d like to move into or where your non-work interests are.

Most councils have information on their websites for local charities and organisations who would really support your time and skills.

My local council’s website for volunteers is – http://www.discovertelford.co.uk/get-involved/organisations/

Go on think what difference you could make to someone’s life or a local charity or school.

The Pig has left the Building

The Pig has left the Building

Yes, after 8 years of learning characters names, voices, playing endless games with characters, reading the books AND watching the TV…. Peppa Pig is offically gone from our house & lives. Her presence hasn’t been very visible for a couple of years, but still the moment when you ask your daughter if she wants to read the books anymore – or watch the DVDs, and the answer was no. “Sigh” says Mummy.

It’s a sign that they’re growing up, more interested in Pokemon Go and Minecraft than the daily activities of a porky pig. I shall miss her squeaky voice and red shoes, and “I am a butterfly”. I shall miss making references to Mr Bull digging up the road – my son asked who Mr Bull was when I said this last week. He’s 8 and from about 1yo we’ve watched the pink pig and her family & now he denies any knowledge!

My daughter is just 6 and also moving on and growing up. They grow and change so fast, but Peppa was a regular part of their early childhood and I must admit I will miss that pink pig and her ballet. It’s more than just a character, its those memories of snuggles on the sofa, often ending in a nap and cuddles in bed reading bedtime stories. They toss it all aside for a pokeball in an instant, leaving Mummy feeling a bit upset!

Luckily I have a 2 year old Niece who is heavily into the pink pig still. So she gets to live on!

Somehow this feels like the end of a part of childhood (worse even than when IgglePiggle left – he was rather annoying though ;-)!). Plus I did insist on doing the “In the Night Garden Ride” last year (kids age 7 & 4 and were asking who they were!) – “Don’t interrupt Mummy’s happy memories of babies”. They’re growing  and moving onto other cartoon characters and interactive play.

I, for one, will miss Peppa and her family, especially “ho ho” Daddy Pig & his big fat belly. But don’t under any circumstances try and take Ben and Holly away from me – I’m not giving those DVDs up, ever! Well not for a good couple of years – they’re too funny (at least for the moment!)

So enjoy your child’s childhood character, because one day they simply won’t remember who they were and the impact they had on all our lives.

#longlivePeppaPig  – oink!

Epic Fail of a Mother’s Day

The kids come home from school full of hugs and love and hand over lovely Mother’s Day cards, which are displayed proudly on the mantelpiece. Saturday there’s talk of flowers and chocolates and lie ins. Potential and expectations rise.

The lie-in and even breakfast in bed happen and are fabulous, but the rest of the day disappears into a normal Sunday. I’m on strike for food, usually I cook a lovely roast, even have my parents round and we have a relaxed fun time. This year it’s just us and I’m not “doing” what I do everyday. Expectations drop further. By evening it’s obvious the promises of “gifts” & hugs is not going to happen, all are too consumed by electronic devices and their own enjoyment to think of what today was called and means.

I spent time alone doing some craft, which was lovely and very productive but feel an epic failure as a Mum that no one could be bothered to fulfil the promises of Saturday – 36 hours before when all the shops were open. It’s not the gifts it’s the lack of thought that hurts.

I hate the disappointment of a day that doesn’t deliver on expectations.

I know I’m not perfect as a Mum, I struggle to remain calm and can get shouty if kids don’t respond, but today is such an emotional disappointment.

Time alone and some lovely essential oils are consoling me and trying to cheer my spirit.

At least tomorrow is another day and next year 364 days away. Or perhaps next year I can hold no expectations other than a normal Sunday.

Happy Mother’s Day from one Mother to another x
